National 12:57 pm AEST June 28 2000 NSW Attorney-General Jeff Shaw resigns AAP -- New South Wales Attorney-General Jeff Shaw has resigned, Premier Bob Carr said today. Mr Carr said Mr Shaw, who is also his industrial relations minister, would be returning to practise law. "It is with real sadness and regret, I'm announcing that Jeff Shaw has chosen to resign from my cabinet, from my team," Mr Carr told reporters. "It's a mutually negotiated and acceptable departure but one of genuine regret. "Jeff has been, I think, the best attorney in the state's history," Mr Carr said. Mr Carr announced the departure in Parliament House with Mr Shaw standing by his side. He said Mr Shaw would be formally handing in his resignation later today. Mr Shaw said he made the decision to stand down over the weekend but had thought about returning to law for several weeks. "I do intend to return to the practice of law as a barrister," he told reporters. "There's no particular precipitating factor, it's really just a question about thinking about my future and what I ought to do." Mr Shaw denied he had lost the taste for politics but conceded it had become less "exciting" in recent years. He said he had enjoyed working for six years as a minister after finding his time in opposition frustrating. Mr Shaw did not rule out taking up a position on the bench in the future but said that would be up to the government to decide. The immediate future would be geared at establishing a legal practice that would be willing to take on "any brief". Under the cabinet reshuffle to follow, Special Minister of State John Della Bosca will take over the industrial relations portfolio. Environment, Emergency Services, Corrective Services Minister and Minister Assisting the Premier on the Arts, Bob Debus, would add attorney-general to his duties. Mr Carr said he would not be filling the Cabinet vacancy in the immediate future, stating Olympics Minister Michael Knight would be free to take on another role after the Games. -- ********************************** 'Click' to protect the rainforest: Make the Rainforest Site your homepage! http://www.therainforestsite.com/ ********************************** ------------------------------------------------------ RecOzNet2 has a page @ http://www.green.net.au/recoznet2 and is archived at http://www.mail-archive.com/ To unsubscribe from this list, mail [EMAIL PROTECTED], and in the body of the message, include the words: unsubscribe announce or click here mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?Body=unsubscribe%20announce This posting is provided to the individual members of this group without permission from the copyright owner for purposes of criticism, comment, scholarship and research under the "fair use" provisions of the Federal copyright laws and it may not be distributed further without permission of the copyright owner, except for "fair use."
