Howson and Howard? Same government? --- Trudy ABC News Fri, 18 Aug 2000 14:47 AEST Former Aboriginal affairs minister defends removals A former federal Aboriginal affairs minister has defended past practices of removing Aboriginal children from their families. Peter Howson, who was the minister in the Liberal government in the early 1970s, has appeared before the Senate inquiry into the Stolen Generations. Mr Howson says he supports the past policies, based on conversations with patrol officers in his department when he was minister. "After questioning them intently on this, I have not found any evidence that supports a finding that there was any policy of forced removal of Aboriginal children," he said. "In the whole of my time, which goes back some years, I still stand by that judgement." 1999 Australian Broadcasting Corporation -- ********************************** 'Click' to protect the rainforest: Make the Rainforest Site your homepage! http://www.therainforestsite.com/ ********************************** ------------------------------------------------------ RecOzNet2 has a page @ http://www.green.net.au/recoznet2 and is archived at http://www.mail-archive.com/ To unsubscribe from this list, mail [EMAIL PROTECTED], and in the body of the message, include the words: unsubscribe announce or click here mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?Body=unsubscribe%20announce This posting is provided to the individual members of this group without permission from the copyright owner for purposes of criticism, comment, scholarship and research under the "fair use" provisions of the Federal copyright laws and it may not be distributed further without permission of the copyright owner, except for "fair use."
