From about 1970 until about 1980 I was an architect in the Northern Territory and spent a lot of time at Outstations in Arnhem Land. They were just getting established. Whist I spent about a year in Katherine (southern Arnhem Land) and a couple of years at Alice Springs, most of my time was spent among the Tiwis and all over Arnhem Land proper from Coburg Peninsular to Groote Island including the islands along the top end. One of my first projects was Elcho Island where the People built the extensions to the school themselves. I have heard that this has since been burned down. A pity. My daughter was also tribalised at Elcho under the name of Wharina, or little red berry (she was a redhead.) I would very much like to read Trudgen�s book. I will get a copy of it.
