In reality, Herron is not planning anything except the announcement they will ask him to make. The blueprint for further dispossession is being prepared in John Howard's office. Trudy ABC INDIGENOUS NEWS 16/10/00 Herron plans land rights act revamp The Federal Aboriginal Affairs Minister, John Herron, is planning to announce an overhaul of the Northern Territory Aboriginal Land Rights Act before the end of the year. A leaked document shows proposals have been prepared for Federal Cabinet, which would reduce the role of the main Aboriginal land councils. The leaked Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission (ATSIC) document is commenting on proposals from the office of indigenous policy in the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet. ATSIC rejects many of the proposals, saying there has been no consultation and they are likely to be rejected by the Senate. The proposals include removing the role of land councils to protect sacred sites and allowing the Northern Territory Government to compulsorily acquire Aboriginal land for public purposes. There would be staged regionalisation of the land councils, and more facilitation of break-away councils; and Commonwealth and Territory Ministers would have increased powers over mining on Aboriginal land. *** -- ********************************** 'Click' to protect the rainforest: Make the Rainforest Site your homepage! http://www.therainforestsite.com/ ********************************** ------------------------------------------------------ RecOzNet2 has a page @ http://www.green.net.au/recoznet2 and is archived at http://www.mail-archive.com/ To unsubscribe from this list, mail [EMAIL PROTECTED], and in the body of the message, include the words: unsubscribe announce or click here mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?Body=unsubscribe%20announce This posting is provided to the individual members of this group without permission from the copyright owner for purposes of criticism, comment, scholarship and research under the "fair use" provisions of the Federal copyright laws and it may not be distributed further without permission of the copyright owner, except for "fair use."
