On the 3 August 2000, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
Advisory
Board, the Queensland Governmentís peak advisory body on Aboriginal
and
Torres Strait Islander Policy, was given carriage of the final stages
of
the Queensland Indigenous Justice Agreement (IJA) by Minister Spence.
The
IJA was a resolution of the Ministerial Summit on Indigenous Deaths
in
Custody of 1997. The resolution aimed to address the
over-representation
of Indigenous people in the criminal justice system. The IJA
is a
statewide agreement.

The Board is holding community forums in Townsville,
Charleville,
Rockhampton, Brisbane and the Torres Strait, to invite community people
and
organisations to shape the Indigenous Justice Agreement.

The forums follow a workshop held on 16-17 October 2000 with
ATSIAB,
Queensland Aboriginal & Islander Legal Service Secretariat (QAILSS) and
the
majority of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Legal Services
from
across Queensland.

The Board invites individuals and community organisations to the forums
to
ensure the agreement delivers justice for Aboriginal and Torres
Strait
Islander people. Please contact the ATSIAB Secretariat on 1800 812
