Protesters block entrance to south coast development site
SYDNEY, Feb 14 AAP|Published: Thursday February 14, 9:56 AM

Protesters today blockaded the entrance to a NSW south coast development
site they claim is an ancient burial ground and the last green corridor
to the sea.

Protest spokeswoman Boni Martin said about 200 demonstrators had
mustered at the Sandon Point site, at Bulli, blocking access to bulldozers.

Sandon Point, on the northern outskirts of Wollongong, has been bought
by developer Stockland.

Ms Martin said the protesters were opposed to the development because of
its significance to local Aborigines and on environmental grounds,
including the site being a floodplain and wetland.

"It's the last green corridor between the mountains and the sea," Ms
Martin told AAP.

The developer planned a massive subdivision by the beach at the site
with low and medium density housing, she said.

However, flooding in 1998 had revealed burials at the site up to six
thousand years old.

An archaeological survey Stockland had carried out there had also
revealed as many as one thousand artefacts, but the developer had
blocked further digs.

Local Aboriginal people would request an injunction in the Land and
Environment Court this morning against the development, Ms Martin said.

Comment was being sought from the developers and local council.
