The new red centre: Aborigines produce their
own wine 

A small Aboriginal community in central western NSW has produced the first
Australian wine made entirely by indigenous people. 

The group from Murrin Bridge, in central western NSW, plan to bottle 1,300
bottles of shiraz this week. 

The grapes were first grown when local jobless people found themselves studying
a course in viticulture to fulfil TAFE requirements, said Murrin Bridge Vineyard
Aboriginal Corporation chairman Craig Cromelin. 

Four years ago they started out with four acres. They had since increased the
vineyard to 100 acres, Mr Cromelin said. 

Their eventual goal was to become a self-sufficient community with jobs created
by the vineyard, he said. 

He said there had been interest in the wine from all over Australia, and not
just
because it was the first produced by Aborigines. 

"We hope that what's inside the bottle is going to be of top class quality," he
said.

They now hoped to become the official wine of large Australian corporations, he
said.
