Number of Refugees and Asylum Seekers Worldwide in 2000: 
14,500,000 people 
(World Refugee Survey 2001, U.S. Committee for Refugees)

Number of Children and Adults in Australian Detention Centres as at
September 7, 2001: 
633 children (inc. 111 children - unaccompanied minors) and 2,659 Adults.

There were a total number of 3403 people in detention with almost 1500 in
Woomera. 
(These figures are based on Department of Immigration and
Multicultural Affairs figures as at September 7, 2001)

Numbers of People Estimated as Illegally Overstaying Visa's as Compared to
Unauthorised Arrivals: 
Illegal Overstayers: 58, 748 (as of July 2001, almost 20% of all
overstayers
came from either the UK or the US) 
Unauthorised Arrivals: 5, 870 (ie., approx 1/10 of Illegal Overstayers !!!)
(These figures are based on DIMA figures as at December, 2001)

Online Discussion forum
"The Minister for Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs, the
Hon. Philip Ruddock MP, invites members of the community to visit his
Online
discussion forum.  The online forum has been established to enable you to
express your views on a range of immigration issues relating to the
formulation of the 2002-2003 Migration and Humanitarian Programs and
associated settlement issues.  You will also be able to read and, if you
wish, comment on other people's views expressed on the site.  Comments
lodged for an earlier forum in October 2001 will be considered.

The forum will commence on Saturday 26 January 2002 and will remain open to
receive comments until Friday 22 February 2002.  The Minister will respond
to a range of the issues raised following the closure of the forum.
This will be an opportunity to convey your views and ideas to the Minister
on:
*       Australia's population future;
*       the size and composition of the Migration Program;
*       ways of achieving the economic and social objectives of immigration;
and
*       Australia's Humanitarian Program.
