AFAIK, Perian is just a FFMPEG wrapper for QUICKTIME, so it would
probably make more
sense to connect red5 directly with ffmpeg (has been done and
documented at red5 wiki/website). And be aware that latest ffmpeg
trunk snapshots does VP6 decoding (only useful for players)  but not
encoding.
