Can you expand on this?  I have seen some issues with regards to 
removing/reloading resources, although I feel like this is more me than anyone 
else.

will be releasing a bunch of codec's over time.
 
As this seems to have some interest I will post any observations that i have 
once I enter into this portion of the code.  Don't hold your breath as I will 
be building the arch. for a while.

I did some encoding with it a while ago.  I think I used the .exe
version and pipped it's output to java.  I gave up on this though as
it was getting more and more hacky the further I went.

If you're a .net programmer the videoloan activex component might do
what you need.  Though I've never used it myself:
