We have used it successfully on Fedora Core 4 Linux.

Iftop Version: 0.17
Put archive in: /usr/local/
Moved to folder: /usr/local/
Unarchived it: tar -xf iftop-0.17.tar
Moved to folder: /usr/local/iftop-0.17
Ran configure: ./configure
Ran make: make
Ran make install: make install

I believe the installer puts it in the right bin folder so it's
available at any prompt.

Run iftop: iftop

There are options when you run it. try 't' and 'p' to combine in and
out and to display the port.
