"If you are just looking for a sniffer (capture and decode packets)
you may want to take a look at ethereal (www.zing.org). It's Open
Source and available for many Unixes as well as for Win32. It lacks
all of the useful features of the Network Genereal product like
pointing out possible problems in the monitored traffic stream but
what is good really depends on what you need/expect from a "good
sniffer software".
