Today's Focus: Gigabit to the Macs
-------------------------------------------------------
By Jeff Caruso
I knew it would happen - I just didnt think it would be so soon. Last
week, chip maker Broadcom announced that its Gigabit Ethernet
transceiver would be installed as a standard feature on Apple's new
Power Mac G4 personal computer.
Thats right, the LAN on the G4s motherboard will be 10/100/1000M
bit/sec Ethernet.
Apples promotional material is careful not to say whether the computer
can actually use up a full gigabit per second, saying only that
built-in Gigabit Ethernet does away with one more workflow
bottleneck. Never mind that even 100M bit/sec probably wasnt much of
a bottleneck, either, as most applications cant even make a dent in
that kind of bandwidth.
Anyway, this is most likely only the first of many, similar
announcements. Its only a matter of time before other PCs will have
Gigabit Ethernet chips built in, as well.
Now remember, these chips also operate at 10M bit/sec or 100M bit/sec.
Chances are extremely good that they wont be called upon for full
Gigabit Ethernet very often.
