This isn't a new idea at all.  Look at recent versions of Quicken, for
example... you can upload your Quicken records to Intuit's website, and
access them even if you don't happen to have a web site available.  In
general, customers at least in the U.S. have reacted very negatively to
the "rent-an-app" idea (although Microsoft is pushing it hard), but it
seems OK to get a service as a "feature" of a for-pay boxed software
package.
