IIRC, IPv6 isn't compiled into the default distribution kernel.
You'll have to build a new kernel for using IPv6 (no big deal if you
know what you are doing).

Actually, it is frustrating that all the advanced router options are
not enabled by default.  (Eg, multiple routing tables and routing
rules aren't possible).

You WILL need the "iproute" package installed - it gives access to all
the advanced routing, such as IPv6 configuration, multiple routing
tables and so on.  Very powerful stuff.

Use vi[m] - it can be used to create all sorts of things, including
shell scripts :-)  You could create, say, /etc/rc.d/rc.ipv6 and call
it from /etc/rc.d/rc.local
