It encrypts things, so you can send it over insecure channels. What's
more, it doesn't require a decryption key to be sent over secure
channels either. A public key is widely disseminated and used to
encrypt mail for you, and then only your private key can decrypt it
(which you don't have to send to anyone) once you've received.
