What chipset is on your card? I don't think Xconfigurator detects your
chipset. You have to select some card from the list. If you don't see your
card there, select Unlisted Card and then choose the SVGA server.

I'm using a video card with an Alliance AT24 chipset and using XFree86 and
getting 800x600 16bpp with excellent performance. I first tried using
Xconfigurator and XFree86 3.3.1 but Xconfigurator could only create a
working modeline at 640x480. Xconfigurator didn't work well for the AT24.

Then I wrote a custom modeline which worked for my card and monitor but
may not work for yours. Recently I switched to XFree86 3.3.2 which has
enhancements for Alliance chipsets. Performance is vastly improved. The
included XF86Setup is better than Xconfigurator IMHO and has a choice for
AT24. It also configures the mouse which Xconfigurator does not. I'm
pleased with the XFree86 3.3.2 upgrade but getting it to work was slightly
trying. I still can't get nxterm to work properly and have had to switch
my COLOR_XTERM definition to xterm instead.
