I want to upgrade a RH 5.0 (stock out-of-the-box 2.0.31 from RH CDs) box to
2.1.53 or later to add full support for the 16750 UART on a Pacific
CommWare ExpressCard 920.

I tried installing 2.1.53 (recommended by the mfr. of the 16750 card) but
had problems with ncurses depending on glibc6 (broken lxdialog, IIRC). I
think my problems were traceable to my having installed glibc 5.4.44 as per
the "changes" file with the 2.1.53 source. Should I not install 5.4.44?

I am also confused about how to handle replacing RPMed packages with
tarballed packages--there are only a few of the prescribed upgrades that I
haven't been able to find in the form of RPMs. I'm assuming I should 'rpm
-e <package>' before installing from the tarball?

At any rate, is there a doc online somewhere that explains the fine points
and any 'gotchas' for RH 5.0 devel kernel upgrades?
