Probably what's happening is that you don't have the lp module loaded (you
didn't compile it into the kernel directly).  To check, do a:

lsmod

and look for: lp

if not, as root, do a "insmod lp"

Not sure what the correct entry in /etc/conf.modules should look like,
because I always compile lp static into the kernel to avoid this problem!

BTW, please don't write your subject line in all caps- there's no need to
shout- many people will delete it without even reading it because it's
annoying.
