By same token, if you have access to the actual machine you could also:

* Boot with a floppy and mount the HD, and edit it then, or do other nasty
stuff.

* Get out your leatherman super-tool, and take the HD home with you.
Set it up as another HD on your own system, mount the partition and
not need passwords.
