Hi,
I have recently installed RH5.0 and is currently upgrading to RH5.1 on
an IBMAptiva 2134/351 with a SIS86C205, rev 211 video chip. Ever since
the first time of installation I have problems with the screen being
cluttered with garbage, making the display unredable. It happens both in
console mode and with X running. The computer is using 2 Megs of the
main memory for the video card.

In console mode the screen is filled intermittently with single/double
dots. Reset coomand does not help.

In X mode the screen is intermittenly filled with garbage rows. This can
be fixed by clearing the screen (fvwm2), ^L in xterm and refresh in
netscape etc. Sometimes however, the screen is completely filled with
verical bars, they seem to come from another bit plane of the display.
Then a warm reboot is not sufficient, a full shutdown, power off etc is
needed.

I have tried different settings of the BIOS including turning off virus
control and shadow RAMs etc. Nothing helps. The problem even exists (in
console mode) using the rescue floppies.

1.) Is it the BIOS that is causing the problems? What about PnP
settings? Is the BIOS active after boot is complete?
2.) I have 78 Meg RAM installed + 2 Megs of video RAM. Is parts of the
RAM defective in any way. (In W95 mode nothing of these problems are
seen)
3) I have tried to update all software relevant to processes running as
daemons, kerneld, update, kflushd, kswapd etc. I have also tried
different kernels 2.0.31, 2.0.24-0.6 and curently 2.0.34-1.

I would be very greateful for hints, tips etc...
