I posted a message yesterday asking for opinions on the Trident Providia
9685 card. Well, last night I installed it, replacing my errant Diamond
Stealth 3D 2000 Pro card that I was having so much trouble with. This time
around with the Trident, Xconfigurator had no problem picking up the card,
it detected the correct rez right off the bat, and I had to do nothing else
to it to make it work, whereas when I installed the Diamond, it picked the
s3v server, which it wouldn't work with (at least in my case) and I had to
end up running xf86config to select the SVGA server and setup the modes and
timings by hand. Also gone is the Diamond card's annoying habit of
corrupting the terminal font upon exiting from X.

Anyway, it was a painless switch, and I'd recommend the 9685 card as an
inexpensive solution for running X. I paid $50 for this card about 8 months
ago. It has NTSC video out, 4mb EDO onboard, and acceptable performance,
although not as fast as the Diamond is for games and such, it is fast
enough for X or any other GUI for that matter.

(Note: I'm not posting this message to start a video card war on the list.
If you think your video card is better, keep it to yourself. I don't shop
for the best, I shop for the cheapest!) :)
