Actually, most (all?) second-generation DVD-ROM drives read CD-R media just
fine. I use a Creative Labs DVD Encore, which included an MPEG decoder card.
The drive does 2x DVD and 24x CD-ROM/CD-R. The drive works fine under Linux,
although there isn't any software for the decoder.
This month, Creative is going to start selling the drive separately, for a
list price of around $150. I'll probably buy one for each of my computers.
