hello,

i'm trying to get linux to recognize my modem. i'm using
the redhat 5.0 distribution and a compaq presario 8712.
the modem is a plug-n-play 33,6 modem.

i called compaq tech support to see if they could provide
information about configuring the compaq modem to be non-PnP.
it turns out, that information is confidential and can only
be attained if i pay compaq $35 bucks.

this is what happens, when i run *minicom* i get an error
message that says,...

minicom: cannot open /dev/modem: No such file or directory

i thought that installing RH 5.0 would automatically *know*
that the modem exists. what can i do? any suggestions?

thanks,
raul
