Don't know for sure. At any rate, I found myself in the same boat, except
I couldn't get GIMP to open .jpg files.
I think there is a library conflict someplace. I was able to solve the
problem by getting rid of all traces of GIMP from my system and rebuilding
the whole thing from source.
