James,
when the boot prompt comes up "Linux boot:" type in "linux
single"
This will boot up linux in single user mode without need for a root
password.
Once in, type in "passwd" and set the root password. Suggest you also
create a user account and do most of your work as user, NOT root. To set
the users password type in "passwd username"
