Two things:

The kernel joystick module is not too tough to get working.

The usual RPMS for XFree86 are not compiled for joystick support.  I
managed to get an RPM with joystick support built a while back, then
discarded the whole works for two reasons:  1) it didn't result in any
improvements over the kernel module, in my case at least, and 2) I decided
to return my joystick and get back to work.  I'm sorry I threw it all out;
should have at least saved the patch and spec files, but I didn't. 
Anyway, it takes about 250-300 MB of free space in /usr/src to build it. 
If you decide to try I can probably help.
