to grossly oversimplify, it's an archive. However, as Ronco of Redhat would
say, "But wait, there's more! It authenticates, it installs, it upgrades,
it....". For all the gory details, have your keyboard fingers do a 'man
rpm' and read all about it. An SRPM, as opposed to an RPM, usually contains
source code as well as/instead of executable binaries.
