I am not sure but I suspect this is a configuration setting on the Xserver
Which configuration tool did you use
The most reliable and least problematic I have found is xf86config though you do need
to know some info for this on the monitor and vid card
I had errors when I used Xconfigurator and some probles as you mention.
Another thing is to try to reduce the resolution
Depending on your setrtings you can try Ctl, Alt, +
