package manager problems

Real newbie here,

I have Red Hat 8 and have been trying to add packages. When I use the package manager in Gnome the window appears, says it is checking the system packages status, does that, and then closes when done. I get no information and can do nothing with any packages. Any ideas on what I might do to get this working better?
