Nautilus was originally a product developed by Eazel. That company went bankrupt, and they sold (or maybe gave) the source code to Ximian, the folks who develop Ximian Gnome. Ximian has since done a great job of maintaining Nautilus, so that it is much better now than it was just a year or two ago.
