If you can't reliably read and write to your disk, your installation will definitely not be stable. Try to replace the cable first - I've heard it happen multiple times that a 40-pin cable is simply not compatible and that a new 80pin cable will work. If this doesn't work, replace the drive. I have yet to see a drive that starts accumulating new errors (after the manufacturers burn-in) that lasts for any length of time.
