Thank you Edward Dekkers for your reply.

Everything you said is correct. The clients netmask is also 255.255.255.0

There are two networks one is 178.1.222.x and 178.1.221.x ok. The problem is in the
gateway having two ethernet cards. The 178.1.222.x has one NIS/NFS server 178.1.222.1.
I used the gateway also as NIS/NFS client to 178.1.222.1 so that users can login
gateway and do their works.

The first problem is I am unable to synchronise the time using NTPD in the gateway.
The NTP server is LAN1 NIS/NFS server.

The second problem is I am unable to ping both the available ethernet devices eth0 and
eth1 in the gateway, whereas I am getting connected with the gateway from other
clients.

What will be the problem ?

The system having two ethernet (178.1.222.11 & 178.1.221.1) hostname is
np. I can reach np from clients. But I am unable to ping the two IPs from
np. I am trying to configure np as a proxy & firewall server. This my first
trial. So if I asked silly questions please dont mind.

OK, so you're saying addresses 178.1.222.11 & 178.1.221.1.

Is there is a cable problem, then I will not get connected from clients. All the
systems are in a same switch and netmask is 255.255.255.0.

Now you're saying the netmask is 255.255.255.0. Is this correct?

This means that the address 178.1.222.11 can only reach subnet 178.1.222.x
Also means that the address 178.1.221.1 can only reach subnet 178.1.221.x

Is this what you are trying to do? What subnet does the client have access to?
