Thanks for the answers on compiling too.. I will try them shortly.

If you want the new version to install on top of the old - use the additional configure flag:

--with-layout=RedHat (double-check configure for case)

This will place the config directory in /etc/httpd/conf, binaries/libraries in /usr, and your wwwroot in /var/www.
