Well, I don't know what the "real" answer, but I can offer two workarounds...

1. Run xscreensaver, then kill it.

2. Just use   $xset s 10000  or some huge number of minutes.  (maybe  $xset s
0   turns it off?   or   $xset s off  ?  Don't know.)
