Running RH 5 and am trying to set up X. 
 
If I use startx the server background and an "X" will appear for about 4 seconds and 
then   
the video corrupts. 
 
If I use startx but delete the xinitrc file, then the X background appears with a 
command line   
window in it and no video corruption.  I can sucessfully run programs from the command 
  
line window. 
 
I have tried editing (using # to rem out the statements) the xinitrc file but it seems 
that the   
files contents are not the problem; just the fact of having an empty file called 
initrc still   
causes the screen corruption. 
 
If I use xdm, the server appears with a logon window in which I can type my user name 
and   
password.  It won't do anything past this point though. (Using xdm was a last minute   
experiment on my part.) 
 
Suggestions on what might be happening to cause this video corruption would be much   
appreciated........thanks! :-)
