I was able to solve this problem this way.

Because I have a generic monitor, it was not probed during set-up. Apparently I selected this (unprobed monitor) as the default instead of specifying the exact monitor...

RH8 call tell that the grahpics card is Intel 845 but I had to further specify the drivers (i810) for this.

Amen to that Todd! Please note I do not disagree with you.

However, it is a shame 845 is not supported properly. I have to admit I love
the boards. Stable as a rock.

But, yes, I've thrown an old TNT2 in my server to have no hassles with X.
Works fantastic.
