Doesn't work for me. My boot loader is GRUB, but my MBR still
contains the string "LILO" at offset 6. Hence I would peek at a
larger portion of the MBR, e.g. with

  $ hexedit /dev/hda
  
and page through the first 512 bytes or so. They should contain 
stuff from /usr/share/grub/i386-redhat/stage1 if it's GRUB. Following
(in my case) are several strings which mention either "grub" or "GRUB".
