It should stop. What happens is the asterisk match the first mgetty file and made a backup. The next time the backup file got backed up itself. Then the backup of the backup got backed up. Then the backup of the backup of the backup got backed up. Then......
I don't believe there's any valid reason to have an asterisk in a logrotate.d file. They goofed. After you took out the asterisk, are you getting many many /var/log/mgetty* files again?
