Hi. I am trying to install an X server--*any* X server--
on a Dell OptiPlex PII 266, 64M RAM, ATI RAGE 3D Pro w/4M.
Absolutely no joy. Xfree didn't work, tried Metro-X with
no success. Monitor is not listed (Dell UltraScan 800HS).
Dell tech support hung up on me (in my quest for monitor specs)
when I mentioned I was installing Linux.
Am close to tears after a week of this.
Posted before, got some good ideas--thanks y'all! However,
still nothing. This is a dual boot W95/RH 5.0, brand new
machine, fresh install so no previous networking config.
Can access the net through W95 (token ring, Novell LAN) but
have no idea how to set this up in Linux without
the control-panel, etc. stuff in X, so although I've
downloaded Mike Wangsmo's Xfree 3.3.2-5 rpm's onto the W95
drive, I don't know how to get them into Linux.
I am trying to sell my office on the idea of RHL for a database
server as opposed to Oracle (@ $20K), or (ack!) Microsoft SQL.
Admittedly since I can't even get a picture on the screen,
my evangelism is ringing a little hollow, and time's a-wasting.
In the meantime I am RTFM'ing and STFW'ing my brains out...
Thanks for any input you can offer me on this!
