I downloaded the RPMs for MySQL (4.0.10) from their site and it installs
fine. However when I try to start the server it tells me that it can not
bind to the unix socket /var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock. I have looked through all
of the files in the RPMs and the mysql.sock file is not in them. Does anyone
know how I would create this file or what set I am missing during the
install?
The server is supposed to create the socket when it starts. The RPM package won't contain that, but it should contain /var/lib/mysql, and that directory should be owned by whatever user mysql starts as.
How are you trying to start the mysql server?
