I never use the gui tools. Some versions of RedHat ago, one of the official network settings tool completely overwrote my wvdial.conf file. I was fortunate because I had a backup of it, but I decided that day that I would not be trusting my settings to any such tools. I'm quite happy editing config files myself. But I really think that if RedHat are going to produce tools to make system configuration, the tools must be very robust.
Backups... yes... File an RFE in bugzilla. Red Hat's tools should follow the same backup strategy as GNOME's (not because that's some authority, but because it makes sense):
