See whether the used POP server supports POP3 with its optional TOP
command. That one does support retrieving just the headers and could
be used for deciding which messages to download and which not.
Before popclient and fetchmail were developed, I used a selfmade
tool to examine messages on the server prior to downloading the
mailbox over an expensive and slow phone/modem line.
