It is probably lftp that is failing...
When largefile support first came out in HPUX it was the same way.  Some utilities 
could create/use files greater than 2GB. But others couldn't.
It wasn't until HPUX 11 that everything worked.

My sense is that lftp doesn't have > 2GB support.
