Thanks but someone gave me the clue yesterday.  The font was not a common
width font which screwed everything up.  Changing the font fixed it.

I had that problem after upgrading from 7.3 to 8.0. I deleted all the kde
setup files/directories in my home directory. Then everything worked fine.
It was probably only one file, but I took the sledge hammer approach.
