I am correcting myself... 
Apparently one of the files in the packages is corrupted. When installing the 
gcc3 packages for RH 7.3 I got:

11:libstdc++3-devel       error: unpacking of archive failed on file 
/usr/share/doc/libstdc++3-devel-3.1/html/install.html;3e64e831: cpio: read 
failed - Bad file descriptor

Anyone seen this before?
