I know this doesn't answer your question, but if this is a production server, I would recommend _not_ installing Gnome and having the box in runlevel 5.. In addtional to security problems, it's also a resource hog. Cygwin has a XFree86 server you can run on your box, and then you can run any GUI applications on the server through your SSH connection and they will be displayed locally.
