I would suggest using the NVidia unified driver because you're not going to get any type of hardware acceleration otherwise. The only thing you will need to make sure of is that you've installed the kernel headers and source - nothing modifying the kernel at all. I downloaded the source for the GLX and kernel driver and compiled them without a problem, and installed them without a problem - without modification to the kernel at all - and was able to gain quite a bit from the native acceleration - especially in using VMWare or playing CORE or any other game necessitating hardware acceleration.
