FWIW, it's just a configuration issue.  I'm using a SuperIO chip in an
embedded project (ALI m5113) and you can configure either of its two
ports as the IR port.   This could be done with a user-space program.

If your irDA device happens to be an m5113 I could send you the
relevant information.
