When I recompile my kernel I always do:
(in /usr/src/linux) cp ./arch/i386/boot/bzImage
/boot/vmlinuz
And then:
cp System.map /boot
I hope you have made a new LiLo menu for your new
vmlinuz, haven't you?

Regards
